Megan and baby Bobby

Megan chose to use My Independent Midwife because she knew that she wanted to birth at home and her local NHS trust had informed her that they were only able to provide a part-time homebirth service. Bobby is Megan's first baby and he arrived at home following a very quick labour. Jenny was their lead midwife and Megan chose a birth only package of care.

Megan enjoyed a straightforward pregnancy and simply wanted to birth her baby at home. Megan dislikes hospitals and has negative associations with them, she did not want her baby's life to begin in hospital and felt passionately that she needed to ensure that midwife attendance at her homebirth would be guaranteed. Although Jenny only met Megan a few weeks before the birth they quickly built a strong rapport and friendship. Megan was incredibly positive and determined that homebirth was the right choice for her and her baby.

Megan was supported in birth by her mum and her friend, Becky, (who usually lives in America). No sooner had Becky arrived in England, Megan went into labour, 4 days before her due date! Megan messaged Jenny at 9pm to say that she had some period-type pain, 2 hours later things seemed to be progressing quickly and Jenny headed over to join Megan and her birth companions. Megan was clearly in established labour when Jenny arrived, having regular, strong surges. Jenny called Sarah to join them and helped Becky get the birthing pool ready. Megan's mum stayed with her, supporting her in the bath,

things were clearly progressing quickly and Megan was coping beautifully, birthing in her home, with her loved ones, just as she had planned.

As soon as the birthing pool was ready Megan got in and immediately felt the relief it offered. Shortly after Megan began to feel urges to push, it didn't take long for Bobby to arrive and in just half an hour after getting into the pool he was in her arms, enjoying his first skin-to-skin cuddle. From the first niggles to baby being born had take just over 4 hours, Megan's instincts to birth at home were more than proven right!

A message from Megan.......

There are so many unknowns in pregnancy, it was absolutely game changing for me to have Jenny as my constant. I was completely in control and completely supported. I'll never forget being in the pool and asking “what should I do now, maybe I should push?!”. Jenny just said “whatever your body is telling you to do, go with it”. About half an hour after that baby Bobby was in my arms. How actually miraculous is that! To be completely lucid for this experience is a gift you can't put into words

Breastfeeding was a challenge I wasn't expecting and I wouldn't be where I am now, with an 8 month old who latches on, if it wasn't for Jenny. No way.
There is so much noise in every direction about the best thing to do, the thing that Jenny gave me was a plan. She knew this is what I needed and when the first one failed she gave me another, and another. She didn't give up on me and so I didn't give up trying. But there also wasn't any pressure either.
I'm so glad I stuck it out, there's absolutely no way that if I was left to navigate that alone I would have managed it.
